in January, we recommended that you check out Anita Sarkeesian’s Feminist Frequency series on YouTube, specifically her analysis of the
gender segregation of LEGO’s marketing. Today, we’re suggesting that you
pay her channel another visit, in order to see the first two
installments of her highly anticipated (and hotly debated) critique of
sexist tropes in video games. Whether or not you entirely agree with
Sarkeesian’s points, the videos make for interesting viewing and serve
as excellent starting points for discussion (such as this commentary on the absence of women of colour in the damsel in distress role). Finally,
if you’re wondering who Anita Sarkeesian is or why these videos are
such a big deal, feel free to do a Google search, but prepare yourself
to lose a significant amount of your faith in humanity.
